January – March 2012

During the quarter;

• There were 435 Crown cases received
• 570 defendants were received in Crown Court
• The average time from committal to hearing was 146 days
• There were 730 Crown court sittings

During Jan - Mar 2012:

• Cases received and dealt with:
  There were 435 Crown cases received during January to March 2012.  This was a 5% increase on the 414 received during January to March 2011.
• Defendants received and dealt with:
  570 defendants were received in Crown Court during January to March 2012 (a 2% increase since the same period last year, when 557 defendants were received).

• Waiting times:
  The average time from committal to hearing for January to March 2012 was 146 days, compared with 126 days for the same period in 2011.
• Disposals:
  County Court Judges disposed of 96% of defendants (653), compared with 99% (532) of defendants in January to March 2011.  14% of defendants were charged solely with offences against the person while 44% of defendants had a combination of charges
• Pleas and findings:
  Of the 679 defendants disposed in January to March 2012, 266 (39%) pleaded guilty to all charges, compared with 242 (45%) during January to March 2011.
• Crown Court sittings:
  In total there were 730 Crown court sittings for January to March 2012 compared with 826 for January to March 2011 (a decrease of 12%), with a total time of 2470 hours sat compared with 2671 hours sat during the same period last year.
