Summary

• Cases received and dealt with:
  There were 286 Crown cases received during July to September 2008.  This is a 31% decrease on the 415 received during July to September 2007. The cases dealt with have decreased by 17% from 178 in July to September 2007, to 147 in 2008.

• Defendants received and dealt with:
  359 defendants were received in Crown Court during July to September 2008 (a 28% decrease since the same period last year). 180 defendants were dealt with during July to September 2008 (a decrease of 22% against the same period last year)

• Waiting times:
  The average time from committal to hearing for July to September 2008 was 116 days, an increase of 4% against the same period in 2007. The average time from conviction to disposal was 71 days, a decrease of 7% on the same period in 2007.

• Disposals:
  County Court Judges disposed of 96% of defendants (173), and 14% of defendants were charged solely with drug offences. 38% of defendants had a combination of charges.

• Pleas and findings:
  Of the 180 defendants disposed, 47% pleaded guilty to all charges and were therefore found guilty on all charges.

• Crown Court sittings:
  In total there were 338 Crown court sittings for July to September 2008 in comparison to 343 for July to September 2007 (a decrease of 1%), with a total time of 808 hours sat compared to 782 hours sat during the same period last year.
