The roll out of the new court operations system called the Integrated Court Operations System (ICOS) has been completed throughout the divisions. Caution should be taken when comparing figures with previous quarters. For further advice on the differences between the current figures and previous quarters, please contact the NICtS. Figures are run from an administrative database and may change due to late returns and further validations.

Summary

During Jan – Mar 2008:

There were 1,019 scheduled magistrates’ sittings of which:
Criminal – 653
Youth – 116
Family – 250

There were 84 additional magistrates’ sittings of which:
Criminal – 75
Youth – 4
Family – 5

There were 54 special magistrates’ sittings of which:
Criminal – 54

12,939 new adult criminal defendants were received in court and 13,236 adult defendants were disposed of during the period.

Just over seven out of ten of the prosecutions disposed in the adult court were brought by the police/PPS.

The volume of adult business was highest in the Division of Belfast.

The average waiting time in the adult criminal court for the corporate target of first hearing to disposal was 8 weeks and overall, 76% were on target.

719 new defendants were entered in the youth court and 864 youth defendants were disposed of in the magistrates’ court.

The average waiting time in the youth court for the corporate target (first hearing to finding – 12 weeks) was 11weeks and 69% were on target.

1,666 new civil applications were entered and 947 civil applications were disposed of.

The average length of time for a case to progress through the civil court was 13 weeks from date of issue to disposal.
