PUBLIC BODIES 2007/08

The Court Service currently has responsibility for the following Non Departmental Public Bodies (NDPBs).

Executive NDPBs

Northern Ireland Legal Services Commission
Northern Ireland Judicial Appointments Commission

The NI Legal Services Commission was established in November 2003 and is responsible for the provision of publicly funded legal services in Northern Ireland under the Legal Aid Scheme.

The NI Judicial Appointments Commission was established in June 2005 and is responsible for judicial appointments up to and including High Court Judge.

The Legal Services Commission and the Judicial Appointments Commission publish their own Annual Reports and Corporate Plans.

8 Advisory Committees on Justices of the Peace

The Advisory Committees on General Commissioners of Income Tax select for the Lord Chancellor’s consideration, candidates with the qualities necessary for appointment as a General Commissioner of Income Tax. However, due to the ongoing reform of the tribunal system, there is a currently a moratorium on the recruitment of General Commissioners of Income Tax.

The Advisory Committees on Justices of the Peace advise the Lord Chancellor on the appointments of Justices of the Peace in Northern Ireland.

There were a total of 138 staff employed in the two Executive NDPBs at 31 March 2008 and their combined expenditure for 2007/08 was approximately £80m.
